Adoption offers a child safety, stability and a nurturing home.
When people talk about adoption, they often describe it as life‑changing. That’s because it truly can be.
For a child, adoption can mean something very simple and very important. It means growing up feeling safe, loved and secure.
For adopters, adoption can be a meaningful and rewarding journey. It’s about offering a safe, loving home and opening your heart. This might mean starting a family or growing the one you already have, in a way that feels right for you.
What is adoption?
Adoption is way of providing a permanent, loving home for children who, for a variety of reasons, can no longer be brought up by their birth parents or within their birth family.
When a child is adopted, all parental rights and responsibilities are transferred to the adoptive parents. This means the child takes their adoptive family’s surname, receives an adoption certificate in place of their birth certificate, and becomes a full and permanent member of their new family.
Adoption can have its challenges, and it isn’t always straightforward. Yet so many adopters say that the love, connection and sense of purpose it brings far outweigh the challenges, making it one of the most rewarding journeys of their lives.
Who can adopt?
One of the biggest myths around adoption is that you have to be “perfect”. In reality, there’s no such thing as a perfect adopter, and no single definition of what a family should look like.
Adopt Thames Valley encourages enquiries from people from all walks of life. You can be single, married, in a civil partnership or living with a partner. You can be a home owner or a renter, living in a house or a flat. You may have a medical condition or a disability. People of all genders, sexual orientations, faiths and ethnic backgrounds are welcome to explore adoption.
What matters most is your ability to offer a child a safe, stable and nurturing home, and the patience, understanding and commitment that comes with it.
Could adoption be right for you?
Adoption isn’t the right path for everyone – and that’s okay. But if you’re thinking about building or growing your family, or feel you could offer a child a safe, loving and stable home, it’s well worth finding out more.
For children waiting for a family, adoption can offer the security and sense of belonging that every child deserves. For adopters, it can be the beginning of a rewarding journey that, while challenging at times, is full of meaning, connection and lasting reward.
Every adoption story is different. From overcoming personal doubts to discovering new ways of thinking about family life, each journey is unique. You can read real stories from people like Charlotte and Peter, and Lucy and Oliver, who found that their past experiences didn’t define their future – and that adoption brought unexpected joy, connection and purpose into their lives.
Why do children need adoption?
Children waiting for adoption come from many different backgrounds. Many have experienced uncertainty, change or loss early in life.
They need adults who can offer stability, care and understanding. Adoption gives children the chance to grow up knowing they belong, with people who are committed to enable them to thrive.
For many children, this sense of security can make a real difference to their confidence, wellbeing and future opportunities.
Support every step of the way
Choosing adoption does not mean doing everything on your own. From the beginning, you will receive training and guidance to help you understand adoption and prepare for the journey ahead.
Support doesn’t stop once a child is placed with you. Ongoing help is available for as long as you feel you need it, whether that’s advice, training, or simply someone to talk to who understands adoption and the challenges that can come with it.
