Getting to Oxford hospitals: what traffic filters mean for your journey

Hospital appointments can be stressful enough so if you’re worrying about how to get there (especially with traffic filter locations in the city), we’ve got you covered.

The reassuring news is that you can access all Oxford hospitals by car without driving through traffic filters.

Many people won’t need to change their usual route. Still, if you’d like extra peace of mind, it’s worth planning your journey before you travel so you can feel confident you’ll avoid any traffic filters.

Locations are operating times:

  • Marston Ferry Road and Hollow Way – Monday to Saturday at peak times between 7am - 9am and 3pm - 6pm.
  • Hythe Bridge Street, St Cross Road, St Clement’s and Thames Street – Monday to Sunday between 7am - 7pm.

A helpful option: free park and ride travel to Oxford hospitals

If you are able to use the park and ride:

Up to mid-August: Up to two adults and three children can claim free bus travel to and from park and ride sites in the city with a valid parking ticket.

From mid-August: You can buy a £3 combined ticket that covers parking for up to 16 hours and bus travel for up to five people of any age.

Tickets are valid on any Stagecoach or Oxford Bus Company service that visits an Oxford park and ride site (not just the dedicated park and ride routes).

If you’re travelling to the John Radcliffe, Churchill or Nuffield hospitals, the 600, 700, H2, X3 and X32 bus routes stop at or nearby. You can pick them up from:

  • 600 or H2 from Thornhill Park and Ride – up to four buses per hour.
  • 700 from Oxford Parkway Park and Ride – up to three buses per hour.
  • X3 or X32 from Redbridge Park and Ride – up to five buses per hour.

The H2, 600 and 700 bus routes stop at or near the Warneford Hospital, take the:

  • H2 or 600 from Thornhill Park and Ride – up to four buses per hour.
  • 700 from Oxford Parkway Park and Ride – up to three buses per hour.

The 400 from Thornhill Park and Ride also stops near the John Radcliffe, Nuffield and Warneford Hospitals. There are up to six buses per hour and it is around a ten minute walk from the bus stop to the hospitals.

Permits

The following people can apply for a free permit that allows a nominated car to travel through the congestion charge locations. The permit holder can change the nominated car as required. You do not need to be an Oxfordshire resident to apply for these permits.

People with a disabled tax class car can apply for a free permit to travel through the filters for that vehicle.
